Look Inside Biltmore House, the Largest Home in the United States

biltmore house

Biltmore Estate is a historic house museum and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. The stone carvers, aristocrats of the labor force, rode in borrowed passenger cars. The rest of the workers sat on supplies and construction equipment in the open freight cars. Although the rail spur was dismantled when construction was finished, remnants of at least one trestle are still visible and may be seen on the Behind-the-Scenes Legacy of the Land Tour.

What time does Biltmore open?

At that point, Biltmore House ceased to be a family residence and was operated as a historic house museum. Their younger son, William A. V. Cecil Sr., returned to the estate in the late 1950s and partnered with his brother to manage the estate's financial trouble. They worked to create the profitable and self-sustaining enterprise that their grandfather had envisioned.

Antler Hill Village is where the Biltmore Winery is located and is also home to restaurants like Bistro, Cedric’s Tavern, and Village Social. Although the Biltmore home’s architecture and design are gorgeous on their own, the home’s history is remarkable, too. For just $12, your audio guide can become your tour guide, telling you all about George Vanderbilt’s family, the lifestyle of the people who lived there, interesting facts about the home, and so much more. As I mentioned earlier, The Biltmore has over one million visitors per year—which, if you do the math, is over 2,500 visitors per day!

The Construction of Biltmore House

The painting, 64 feet long by 32 feet wide, consists of 13 separate canvases, the central scene surrounded by 12 smaller paintings. The black marble fireplace and walnut mantle were carved by Austrian artist Karl Bitter. Once termed “one of the best read men in the country” by New York media, George Vanderbilt was a reader from an early age.

Seeing the majestic appearance of Biltmore House today, you almost believe it was always part of the landscape. In reality, it was a monumental construction project as these photos from the Biltmore archives show in the first of two blog posts. With a full year of offerings, there’s always something new to discover. An overnight stay invites you and yours to explore it all at your leisure, where more time shared means more memories made. After perusing these Biltmore Estate photos, discover the story of Hearst Castle, the sprawling mansion built by the 20th century's biggest newspaper tycoon.

This hotel is a must-visit in Asheville, especially if you’re going to be in town during the holidays. Although it’s not possible to stay in the guest rooms at the actual Biltmore House, you can spend the night nearby at The Inn on Biltmore Estate. This four-star luxury hotel is an excellent place for a romantic getaway with your partner.

As you explore the estate, enjoy shopping, dining and luxury accommodations. For a deeper dive into the history, we suggest booking one of the Biltmore Estate tours. Note that to join any guided tour, you need a daytime Biltmore ticket, annual pass, or a package stay with Biltmore House admission. One of the most critical tips for visiting the Biltmore Estate is that the time on your ticket is for your self-guided house tour, NOT your entry to the estate. Today, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville is the largest private home in America and attracts over one million visitors per year.

George Vanderbilt may have included 43 bathrooms in his plans for the Biltmore House. However, unfortunately for visitors, none of these are for public use! So, make sure to use the restroom before you begin your tour of the Biltmore House. For first-timers, getting to the Biltmore House entrance can be a bit tricky. So, make sure to allocate sufficient time to travel from the admission gate to the house for your ticketed time.

I tend to skip audio guides to save money—but unfortunately, that was the wrong choice for the Biltmore. The tour is much more extensive than you would expect, and it is an excellent value for what you pay. In 1930, Cornelia and John Cecil opened Biltmore House to the public, hoping to increase local tourism during the Depression. In 1942, during World War II, Biltmore House stored priceless art from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The house is a staggering 175,000 square feet (four acres) with 33 bedrooms, 65 fireplaces and 43 bathrooms.

After Vanderbilt's unexpected death in 1914, of complications from an emergency appendectomy, his widow completed the sale. She intermittently occupied the house, living in an apartment created in the former Bachelors' Wing, until the marriage of her daughter Cornelia to John Francis Amherst Cecil in April 1924. The Cecils had two sons, who were born at Biltmore in the same room where their mother was born. George Vanderbilt opened his opulent estate, on Christmas Eve of 1895, to family and friends from across the country who were encouraged to enjoy leisure and country pursuits.

George Vanderbilt opened Biltmore House on Christmas Eve in 1895 after six years of construction. George lived on the property with his wife, Edith, and daughter, Cornelia. The house was not opened to the public until the 1930s to generate income to preserve the estate. Included with all Biltmore House admission types, our informative Audio Guides share Biltmore House history; here guests learn about its grand Banquet Hall. If you’re looking for tickets to Biltmore Asheville North Carolina, visit their official website and skip the lines! But I would reconsider when she’s 7-8, and maybe that would be age-appropriate considering there is a kid’s version of the audio tour, as we mentioned earlier.
